The proton is with the neutron, one of the constituents of the atomic nucleus, its counterpart. It is the nucleus of the hydrogen atom. Carrying a positive elementary charge +e and being 1836 times heavier than the electron, the proton is seen today as a small but complex particle. Protons, as neutrons, are sensitive to nuclear forces. The number of protons in the nucleus equals the number of electrons of the atom.
